NEWPORT 1986 – 2006 A PROMISE KEPT
“One Day a great city will rise on the west bank of the Hudson River” – Alexander Hamilton
June 2006 marked one of the most notable milestones in the histories of Jersey City and the entire New York metropolitan area – the 20th Anniversary of the Newport Ground-Breaking Ceremony, which took place on June 4, 1986.
After two decades of Newport’s extraordinary development – transforming 600-acres of abandoned waterfront into the most successful mixed-use community in the world – this historic anniversary and unprecedented achievement was commemorated in a way that not only brought Newport the attention and recognition it richly deserves, but also sets the stage for its continued progress and success in the years ahead.
Construction currently continues on the phenomenally successful Shore Club condominium, which was virtually sold out within three weeks of announcing that sales had started on its first phase: 216 luxury units. Plans were be revealed on more buildings to be built, including apartment homes, hotels, shopping and of course parks and community facilities.
In addition to its advanced infrastructure and state-of-the-art buildings, Newport is an extraordinary “living” community. Already 16 million square feet have been developed. Approximately 8,000 full-time residents, more than 20,000 employees, and tens of thousands of visitors come to Newport daily to take advantage of the breathtaking waterfront views, fantastic shopping, and upscale dining.
The rich history of the Newport waterfront community spans back to the days of Henry Hudson and Alexander Hamilton. It was Hamilton, who gazing at the site from lower Manhattan, predicted: “One day a great city will rise on the west bank of the Hudson River.” Begun in 1986, today, Newport is the largest and most successful mixed-use community in America, and one of which all of us – civic leaders, residents, businesses, and retailers – can be justly proud.
Newport, indeed, is a Promise Kept!
